The Best Monuments

Salamanca is among the top monumental cities in Spain. It is in this city that you will find some of Spain’s most important Plateresque and Renaissance collection of architecture. One of Europe’s oldest universities is also located here and the beauty plus the historical patrimony and the liveliness of the city makes it a wonderful place to spend a holiday or to tour during a holiday in Spain.

The city was founded during the pre roman times and it took a turn for the better when the university based here was constructed back in 1218. The university is actually one of the best monuments of the city with the extraordinary Plateresque façade display dating back to the 16th century. Other features which will easily capture you eyes are the coast of arms and religious scenes on the building.

The city is also home to two wonderful cathedrals which are worth checking out. The buildings are next to each other but showcase different architectural styles without spoiling the harmony that they achieve together. This is the Catedral Nueva and the Vieja Catedral. The former has a combination of Baroque, Renaissance and Gothic elements and you will find the complicated sandstone work exhibit on the façade quite interesting. The latter on the other hand showcases Romanesque style and has treasured paintings and an altarpiece that cannot be missed for anything.

The city center of Salamanca is the area within which you will find most of the monuments. There is for instance the Plaza Mayor and the beautiful river not forgetting cafes, arcades and also Royal Pavilion which is highly ornamented. This square was built under the instructions of Felipe V and it is simply impressive. The city also has numerous religious monuments but those which cannot be missed include San Esteban convent which has a Plateresque façade and also the Las Duenas Convent that has an ornamented cloister that is nothing short of beautiful.

Other attractions in Salamanca that are worth visiting are Casa de las Conchas with the stone shell covered walls, the octagonal fortress Torre del Clavero with its impressive Mudejar style decorated turrets and Roman bridge that is over River Tormes. This is indeed a city that has lots of interesting things to see leave alone the interesting things that visitors can take part in while visiting it.
